Chickins/Warrups Petition
Captain Chickins of Redding and his son Warrups signed this request to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1749 with their unique symbols. Chickins’ land was being trespassed upon by English settlers and their animals, and they requested to trade their land with Englishman John Read. Chickins described the wanted land as “most conveniently situated for me and my Pappooses improvement,” in an area where there was “no likelihood of any English Settling so near as to Interrupt us for a long time.”
