Fairfield organized a full-fledged police department in 1930, replacing a system of constables. Pictured here at 633 Post Road are the members of the initial police force: Christian Shick, Eugene Burns, Thomas Shaughnessy, Chief Arthur Bennett, Charles Gandorf, Thomas Murphy, and William T. Burr.

Police in Memorial Day Parade, 1947

Memorial Day
Judge Ned Ostmark (center) leads a parade, with police on motorcycles and horseback, along the Post Road in 1947. The first Memorial Day parade probably took place in 1923 and has been an important part of the town’s commemoration ever since.
