Gold Selleck Silliman was one of the larger slaveowners in Connecticut. In 1790, there were about 470 slave holding families in Fairfield County, with about 799 slaves in the population. Out of the entire population, there were only 318 free persons of color. Mary Silliman was reported to own seven slaves during that time. By 1830, Fairfield County had 1,388 free persons of color in the population and only eight slaves made up that population. </text>
