The St. Marc hotel was built in 1848 as The Fairfield House. The building traded hands several times until it was purchased by George Wells, who renamed it The St. Marc Hotel. The hotel was very fashionable for the time, offering summer band concerts and musicals as well as sleigh ride parties during the winter. When Wells died in 1894, the place was sold to two Bridgeport promoters who destroyed the reputation of the hotel, where alcohol was plentiful during all hours of the day. The hotel even reached the point where it would have women of the night as guests. The hotel ended up getting raided by the local police, which ended its history as an establishment. Fredrick Sturges purchased the property under the agreement that it never be used as a hotel again. The major potion of the hotel was demolished, with the remaining part being used as a Red Cross headquarters. </text>
