Title A name given to the resource St. Mary's by the Sea Subject The topic of the resource Fairfield-- Places Beaches Churches Black Rock Description An account of the resource St. Mary's by the Sea in Black Rock was built in 1893 by New York stockbroker Thomas Pearsall in honor of his wife, and the log-walled chapel was used for about nine years. Pearsall's house was on the bluff just uphill from the chapel. The chapel was taken down in 1925, and the land was turned into a park as a WPA project in the 1930s. It continues to serve as a public park today. In this photograph, taken by Mabel Osgood Wright, Ash Creek is in the foreground.
