Collection of Lanceolate Blades
Title
Collection of Lanceolate Blades
Description
These lithics are selected from a group of 93 blades
which were found together in a cache in Fairfield.
The stone is dolomite and shale, which came from
upstate New York. Each blade is strikingly similar.
The blades were found lying against one another and
next to a large boulder, suggesting that they were
being carried in a pouch when they were left behind.
These types of artifact caches are rare in Connecticut.
They raise important questions about artisan tool
production, craftsmanship, trade, and travel networks
in indigenous America.
