Covered Storage Basket

Title

Covered Storage Basket

Description

This basket is attributed to artist Molly Hatchett
of the Paugussett, a basket maker who sold her work
throughout western Connecticut. Her baskets can
be found in museum collections across America,
including the Smithsonian. Regional woodsplint
Native baskets can be traced to particular makers
and communities by their signature designs.
This basket, with its center-crossing lid weave,
color staining pattern, and shouldered form are
characteristics of Molly Hatchett’s works. Difficult
to see now, the faded vertical warps of the basket
splints alternate in dye.
